First Man (2018) Shoots for the Moon But Misses

First Man movie review
Universal Pictures
Most are probably familiar with Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission: the space race between the U.S. and Soviet Union, the "one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" quote, the iconic photo of Neil's footprints on the moon. Here for First Man, director Damien Chazelle explores a deeper, not widely known story, behind one of humankind’s biggest achievements.

Following the death of their toddler Karen, Neil (Ryan Gosling) and his family gradually set a course for him through trial and error to chart the famous Apollo 11 mission. While working his way up as a pilot and surviving the Gemini missions to landing on the moon, Armstrong’s eyes are so strongly set on the stars to deal with his grief, his relationship with wife Janet (Claire Foy) and their two sons starts falling apart at the seams.

One can’t have a biopic about Neil Armstrong without the Apollo 11, and vice versa. To tackle such an elusive figure with monumental events, it’s a real balancing act for any director to want to tell both stories. There's no question that Chazelle wanted to explore Armstrong's side of the events. However in focusing the film almost entirely from his perspective, the overall journey to the moon leaves a lot to be desired.

First Man (2018) Trailer Reaction

First Man (2018) Trailer Starring Ryan Gosling

After gathering even more steam in Hollywood following his award-winning musical La La Land, director Damien Chazelle decided to take one giant leap from Tinseltown to outer space. Teaming up again with human unicorn Ryan Gosling, the two embark on a biopic of prolific astronaut Neil Armstrong becoming the first man to walk on the moon for the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.

If you've been following my obsession admiration Ryan Gosling here or on twitter, then you must know that this post was an inevitable. Combining two of my biggest loves - space and the Canadian actor - inspired me to count down the days until the official trailer for First Man would drop. *deep breaths* Now that it's finally been released, it's time for another trailer reaction! SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT.

Stars I Love: Ryan Gosling

Art Streiber New York Magazine
How do you describe Ryan Gosling? I've unceremoniously given him the nickname Canadian Sugarcube, but that's just my massive crush talking. (The Twelve Days of Ryan Gosling is up to two threads on twitter and has only just begun...) But critics have called him one of the best actors of his generation, while almost anyone familiar with The Gos calls him charming, talented, smart, personable - to say the least. Settle into your onesie, in celebration of his birthday, we're digging into the charisma of his career and what makes him so lovable. Or, all of the reasons why he's one of my favorite stars - if not my TOP favorite.
