5 Favorite FRIENDS Thanksgiving Episodes

Halloween has its horror movie marathons. Christmas has it's A Christmas Story 24-hour takeover on TBS. And, Thanksgiving has to be all about Friends.

Perhaps the best moments of the gangs' dysfunctional friendships and mishaps came out around the holidays, just like all of us normal folk. One of my favorite ways to get into the holiday spirit is to watch their awkward and funny Thanksgiving episodes full of sisterly quarrels, secrets coming out of the closet, and the Gellar competition out in full swing. Hope you enjoy this post, the one with the Friends Thanksgiving Episodes! Which ones are your favorites? Feel free to share in the comments!

The One With Rachel's Other Sister
The holidays are a great time to start questioning your mortality - at least for the Greene and Gellar families. Rachel's older sister Amy (Christian Applegate) finds out she is not Emma's godmother and won't selfishly inherit her baby if something dire happens to Rachel and Ross.  Her discovery unleashes a can of worms of who is mature enough to raise Emma. Their conversation is really kinda dark for the holidays, but the epic showdown between Amy and Rachel is worth it, as well as Chadler momentarily showing he's the mature one of the group. Meanwhile Phoebe helps Joey cover his arse at work after realizing he missed appearing on the Days of Our Lives float at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. (Of course, if anything happened to Chandler, Ross doesn't get Joey.)

Favorite Quote: "Yeah, like Ross and Rachel are so responsible. Emma is the product of a bottle of Merlot and a five year old condom." - Monica

The One Where Ross Got High
Ross and Monica's parents join the gang for Thanksgiving. Chandler tries to win over their approval when Monica reveals they never really liked him. All seems to be lost when the Gellar skeletons start coming out of the closet, like the time Ross got high and blamed it on Chandler - among other things. Really, Chandler's life was pretty messed up as a child but what did he marry into?

Meanwhile Joey just wants to goooo because he could be spending the night with his roommate Janine and her hot dancer friends. Phoebe can't figure out if she has a crush on Monica's dad or Jaqcues Cousteau. And, poor Rachel wants to contribute to Monica's big feast by cooking a trifle, but unfortunately, it comes out tasting like FEET - one of the series most awesome bloopers.

Favorite Quote: "What is with everyone today? It's Thanksgiving, not truth day!" Ross

The One With The Football
Ross and Monica's competitive streak come out to drag the whole gang into an old-fashioned game of football. Chandler and Joey fighting over a hot girl stranger from Neverland Netherlands takes the cake but we also have Ross and Monica's old grudges, Phoebe kicking ass at football with her flashing, and Rachel going really long. Of course, it's all for the Gellar Cup.

Favorite Quote:
Monica: Losers walk.
Ross: losers talk.
Chandler: No, no actually, losers rhyme.

The One Where Underdog Gets Away
Everyone's plans for Thanksgiving go awry. Joey finally scores a major advertising campaign for Syphillis (which makes his family alienated from him). Rachel can't go skiing with her family. Monica and Ross' parents are away for the holidays, so Monica takes on the role of Mom. Preparing a big feast for everyone, of course, she's gotta make four kinds of potatoes. Then, Underdog (the balloon, not the cartoon) snaps off its tether. The gang goes to watch the huge Macys balloon fly over the city, effectively getting locked out of the apartment.

Favorite Quote:
Chandler: I know this isn't the kind of Thanksgiving that all of you all planned, but for me, this has been really great, you know, I think because it didn't involve divorce or projectile vomiting. Anyway, I was just thinking, I mean, if you'd gone to Vail, and if you guys'd been with your family, if you didn't have syphilis and stuff, we wouldn't be all together, you know? So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm very thankful that all of your Thanksgivings sucked.
All: That's so sweet.
Ross: And hey, here's to a lousy Christmas.
Rachel: And a crappy New Year.

The One With The Rumor
Perhaps my favorite FRIENDS episode of all time, but definitely my favorite Thanksgiving one. Brad Pitt guest stars as an old high school friend Will, who lost a ton of weight and apparently HATED Rachel (Jennifer Aniston, you know 'cause when this episode came out they were married, and playing that they hated each other, and it was all so very epic then..and even now) when they were teenagers 'cause she was not so nice. But not only did he have problems with Rachel, so did Ross, or so he claimed. The duo managed to get back at her with a small rumor, which of course unleashes more secrets and rumors. Meanwhile, Joey tries to finish a whole turkey on his own with the aid of maternity pants, and as usual, Phoebe, sits back and enjoys the insanity and Pitts' hotness.

Favorite Quote:
Will: Look at her holding those yams. Those are our two worst enemies, Ross - Rachel Green and complex carbohydrates.

  1. I love watching all the Thanksgiving episodes, even though we don't celebrate in my country. My favorite is The One With The Football and The One Where Ross Got High (that trifle!), but they are all really funny :)
