TMP - Oscar Winners Edition: Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Wandering Through the Shelves hosts Thursday Movie Picks. It's a weekly series where bloggers post and share various movie picks every Thursday.

The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's theme is Oscar Winners Edition: Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Black Panther - Ruth E. Carter

I know I've picked Black Panther before, but seeing the film win all of those technical Oscars in 2018 was so exciting. I loved Sandy Powell's costumes for The Favorite and Mary Poppins Returns, but Ruth's work with all of the different tribes and fusing African traditions with futurism has such an incredible attention to detail.

Mad Max: Fury Road - Jenny Beavan

Another year where Sandy Powell was nominated for two films in one category - Cinderella and Carol - Jenny Bevan's costumes for all of the War Boys and the main ensemble couldn't go overlooked.

The Young Victoria - Sandy Powell

It's hard to believe that Powell has been nominated 15 times and only won 3 Oscars. But she definitely deserved it for The Young Victoria. The color palette is heavenly. And, it's wonderful to see historical films maintaining period-accurate costumes, which (depending on the designer) is surprisingly less consistent now.

Star Wars - John Mollo

I had no idea Star Wars won for Best Costumes. But now that I think of it, it created so many iconic looks with Princess Leia's hair rolls, Chewbecca's furry body suit, and the Jedi robes.

Moulin Rouge! - Catherine Martin and Angus Strathie

Satine's red dress. Do I need to say more????
